Queens County Home Support is a not-for-profit government-funded provider of home support services serving residents of Queens County. Queens County Home Support is under the direction of a Board of Directors.

We provide services authorized by the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness, Continuing Care, to enable clients to remain in their own homes for as long as possible in safety and comfort.

What is Home Care?

Home Care is available to all Nova Scotians who need help with care in their homes and communities. This service is offered through local Continuing Care offices in each health authority and by the Nova Scotia Health Authority.

Home Care Services supplement the help people already receive from their family, friends or community. Through Home Care, people can remain independent by staying in their homes and community. It is always the first option for care in the community.

How do I access Home Care?

You can speak to someone about Home Care by calling Continuing Care at 1-800-225-7225.

Coordinating Your Care

Continuing Care encourages and supports your wellness and independence. Continuing Care does this by working with you to explore options to help you keep as much independence as possible. Once you call for a referral, a Care Coordinator will contact you to assess your care needs. They will work with you and your caregiver to create a plan of care that is right for you.

Your Care Coordinator will find out what services you are eligible for and if you will need to pay a fee. They will help you find the services that are right for you and set them up.

Once you're assigned a Care Coordinator, you will not have to register again to gain access to a range of programs and services to help you live safely and independently at your home. Your Care Coordinator will work with you and other support services while providing ongoing assessments as required.

Some services that you may feel you need to access at any time are:

  • Home Support Services help people with bathing, dressing, preparing meals, and essential housekeeping.

  • Nursing Services through VON, at home, such as IV therapy, catheter care, peritoneal dialysis, wound care, and general nursing care. Nursing services require a physician's order. Home Support Workers and CCAs do not perform nursing services.

  • Caregiver Benefit Program offers funds to people who are caring for someone with a low income and high care needs if Queens Home Support is not for you.

  • Family Relief/Respite Services, both in-home and in-facility, give caregivers a short-term break.

  • Self-Managed Care Program helps people with physical disabilities set up and manage their care services if Queens Home Support is not for you.

  • Supportive Care Program helps seniors with cognitive impairments (or those under age 65 with a diagnosis of dementia) pay for home support services.

  • Community Bed Loan Program offers temporary use of a hospital bed at home.

  • Community Wheelchair Loan Program loans low-income seniors manual or powered wheelchairs to use at home.

  • Home Oxygen Services provide in-home oxygen equipment and supplies.

  • Personal Alert Assistance Program helps people buy a personal alert device or emergency response service.

Placement in Long-term Care

Everyone's needs are different and may change over time. Queens Home Support wants you to be as independent as possible so you can safely stay in your home. If this is no longer possible, an application for licensed long-term care may be considered. Having a Care Coordinator for support is important as they will help you and your family navigate long-term care placement if you feel this is necessary.
